OBJECTIVE:
The objective of this programme is to ensure that students are aware of social issues in architectural projects. Site planning principles and requirements are emphasized along with the need to inject innovative ideas in propagating social interaction. Students will be able to understand issues of sustainability, affordability and appropriateness in architectural projects.
The projects for Design 5 range from housing to campus design. These projects require students to understand the social issues that need to be considered whilst designing such projects. Students are required to work in groups to do research on certain issues on the projects. The group work organization is a useful tool for pro-active discussion and co-ordination.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Learning outcomes of the course are for students to be:
L.O.1: Able to address social issues that influence the planning and design of buildings.
L.O.2: Able to work in groups and produce good master plans for projects given.
L.O.3: Able to understand and apply knowledge on building technology to design.
L.O.4: Able to design buildings that are sensitive to the surrounding environment.
L.O.5: Able to present work graphically and orally.

Socio-Cultural Studio
Semester 2 Session 2007/08
Fakulti of Built Environment
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia
PM. Dr. MZin Dr. Khairul Anwar Abd.Halim WanRazali
As PART of the third year studio programme, students are invited to participate in a competition to provide two output - a master plan and individual major project - for actual sites located within the current Bandar Seri Alam development plan. This will be an “ideas” competition through which students are encouraged to investigate and produce creative and innovative ideas for enhancing living, leisure and working conditions of communities within the relevant sites. It also provides an opportunity for exploring and evaluating new possibilities in designing the built environment with contemporary socio-cultural issues in mind. For students to generate the broadest possible expressions of design, there will be no limit to the issues that may be tackled and incorporated within the process of planning and designing of the two schemes.
Ideas for competitions may serve as catalysts, showing what is possible and leading to a better understanding of the possibilities of the client’s project. There will be a wide range of problems that could be derived from issues or factors being considered by the students. This should result in appropriate design solutions. Those solutions could include new developments in housing, community buildings or any other building types, existing or new. However, such schemes MUST primarily address Socio-Cultural aspects of architectural design before anything else. The studio programme consists of the following items:
1. Masterplan (Group submission)
Each masterplan provides an overall vision of a selected group of around 5 architectural students. Each group will deal with a specific parcel of land intended for development. The master plan must reflect concepts that revolve around socio-cultural issues of interest particularly to the local population. Naturally, such issues would have a huge impact on their lifestyles, especially where it concerns work, leisure and day-to-day living. Students are encouraged to generate (future) ideas that provide for creative, constructive and innovative lifestyles. Essentially, undertaking a masterplan of specific parcels of land will be a very good exercise in formulating design briefs for students. Students are asked to devise their own brief as a group (masterplan) and later, as individuals (major project). This is a 4-week project and the final submission and assessment will be on the 11th of February 2008.
A group masterplan involves approximately 50 acres (1 acre = 4047 sq. meters) of land within the land parcel. This means that each student in a group will have at least 10 acres to work with in coordination with other students in the same group in order to come out with a masterplan. Each student can choose his or her building typology or even devise a new typology that is appropriate in addressing the socio-cultural issues identified. A student can select a housing or a non-housing scheme for the initial masterplan, and proceed later to undertake an individual design of the scheme of choice (i.e. the major project).
The masterplan will be assessed both as a studio programme and a potential submission for the competition.
2. Major project (Individual submission)
This 7-week project is the individual contribution to the initial master planning activity. If a student chooses a non-housing scheme (e.g. community centre, convention, etc.), then he or she has to work within a land area of approximately 2 acres (8.094 sq. m) and a minimum built-up area of 30,000 sq. ft (2,780 sq.m). Alternatively, if a housing scheme (repeated) is chosen, the student will deal with a minimum land area of 8-10 acres (32,375 sq.m-40,469 sq.m). Generally, students need to consider various planning and technical needs such as zoning constraints, plot ratios of buildings (according to functional needs of commercial activities and existing policies), construction issues, building setback, access, car park, landscape, easement etc. All individual proects must include a major medium rise building with a minimum of 4 storeys and including lift facilities.
The individual major project will be assessed both as a studio programme and a potential submission for the competition. Final submission and assessment will be on the 11th of April 2008.
3. Small project (Individual submission)
This will be a 2-week exercise that will NOT be a part of the architectural ideas competition but must be submitted as a studio project only. Its nature and scope will be at the tutor’s discretion. Submission and assessment will be on the 22nd of February 2008.
4. Seminar (Group submission and presentation)
This will be a 2-week exercise that will NOT be a part of the architectural ideas competition. It will initiate the start of the new semester for the studio. Student groups are asked to conduct a seminar on issues dealing with the socio-cultural dimensions of architecture and the built environment.
Marking scheme
