KM 5 KEDAI PROJECT BRIEF : DrZin'WB Semester 2 Session 2013/14

PROJECT BRIEF

Semester 2   Session 2013/14

SIDE-LINE

Introduction
Traditional villages generally have many unique characteristics that offer conducive and pleasant living communities. Growing economy and urbanization that usually expanded beyond the urban limits will  become a threat to traditional village and local existing community. Is there a fair and sensible solution to the issue of urbanization and modernization?. What would be the best option? What are the main strategies to be offered?

Intention
As elaborated in the year 3 course outline which focused on community participatory design project, workbase DrZin is selecting Kg Melayu Lima Kedai as the focussed community and will be the project site. This project will expose students to boots-on-the-ground research methods on how to collect first-hand information systematically in their fieldworks; site inventories, building surveys, socio behavioural observations, interviews, etc. Students will be trained how to engage local residents in discussing and recognising local issues, collecting oral histories, identifying local identities, tangible and intangible heritage, analysing site potentials, strengths, weaknesses, etc. Besides, students need to approach local authorities  to get their latest development plans, local guideline, local plan, etc. These findings will be sorted, critically analysed and synthesised in order to establish a comprehensive development brief.

Location & surrounding
Kampung Melayu Lima Kedai is a traditional malay village with the total area approximately 40 acres occupied by about 40 families since 1970‘s. Located in the Iskandar region, specifically within Nusajaya district, it is expected to be surrounded by rapid development with modern world class infrastructures.

Issues
Several critical issues are being faced by the villages including flashfloods, pollutions etc. Detail issues need to be identified by students through site visits, observations, short stays and interviews. Some general research questions may include:-
  • What is the current socio-cultural and socio-economic status of the villages.
  • Is there any appropriate future development plan for the village by the authority ? Or is it being side-lined?
  • How would be the situation of the village when all the surrounding development are in progress and completed?
  • Is there any significant elements in the village that can be preserved and enhanced to be a sustainable community and viewed as significant contributing factors for adjacent surrounding and also overall Nusajaya master plan development?.
  • What are the possible medium and long term development strategies responding to the surrounding development?
  • If there is to be development in the village, what model would be the best option?
  • For the purpose of this studio design requirement, what is the best and appropriate type of building, location and architecturally significant to be suggested as village landmark.
Some fundamental area of research to be identified, analysed and proposed are:-
  • Village profile, population growth rate and their current facilities and activities.
  • Understanding village visions and hope for the next ten years focusing on their needs.
  • Overall opportunities and challenges faces by the village communities for the village to be sustained as a traditional village and prosperous community livings.
  • New development ideas and the future impacts on the physical development, social, cultural and economical.

Tasks
The main and major design project is to design a center for activities, knowledge, social and/or economic development, appropriate for the enhancement of village livings of Kg Melayu Lima Kedai.

Leading to the above major design project, several small projects, tasks and activities are to be carried out by all students in group or individually. Please refer to the common SBEA Design 6 Course Outline as well as Overall Studio Project Brief for CLO, Schedule of activities, Submissions requirement and grading,
